The 2020 Houlong Watermelon Festival’s series of activities were held at Shang Shun Mall, Toufen City, this afternoon. Magistrate Hsu Yao-chang recommended the sweet, sandy, and delicious Houlong watermelons as the best choice for cooling down and quenching thirst in summer. Visitors from all over the country were welcomed to eat and buy watermelons at Houlong, taste the best watermelons in Taiwan, and enjoy a little trip to the 18 townships of Miaoli during the Dragon Boat Festival.
The endorser of Houlong Watermelon Festival, Xu Fu-kai, was invited to participate in today’s activities. After shooting of the watermelon microfilm wrapped, many people started team buying Houlong watermelons on Facebook Fan Page, and the fame was successfully built. Xu’s fans even rented a car to follow him to the scene of the activity that day. In addition to seeing their idol, they also experienced the sweet charm of Houlong watermelons together with Xu. Earlier, the Houlong Township Office received calls from Xu’s fans asking to bring home a Houlong watermelon that Xu recommended and refusing to accept the chance that they were sold out! Therefore, the administrators of Houlong Township Office tried their best to prepare more watermelons so that more people would have the chance to taste the “super sweet watermelons” recommended in the promotion film.
Magistrate Hsu Yao-chang said there has been a long history of watermelon cultivation in Houlong. In the Japanese-ruling period, the Houlong watermelon was even designated by the Japanese emperor as the top watermelon of Taiwan, which had to be used as tribute to the emperor in Japan. The current cultivation area of Houlong watermelons accounts for about 160 acres, the largest in Miaoli County. To market Houlong watermelons, Houlong Township Mayor, Zhu Qiu-long, has held a series of activities at the Watermelon Festival every year since he took office and connected them to local attractions to encourage tourism development. Every year, the Watermelon Festival attracts a lot of visitors and has become a popular annual local event.
Houlong Township Mayor, Zhu Qiu-long, has endeavored to promote the local industries. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, an innovative method has been adopted to market one of the three treasures of Houlong, watermelons, for the first time. He also participated in the performance in person by becoming a driver in the film. He spared no effort to market Houlong watermelons and deeply impressed the watermelon farmers! For the flash activity this time, he also showed up to cooperate with Xu Fu-kai. It is hoped that more friends will seize the opportunity to enjoy Houlong watermelons with the best quality and unique taste.
The organizer also integrated the concept of an amusement park into the seaside landscape of Houlong with the image of a seaside train and set up a facility with miniature train rides. Those who buy a watermelon can get a train ticket, with which adults and children can enjoy a ride. Hand-drawn pictures are also used to promote the leisurely impression of the attractions in Houlong and encourage people to eat watermelons and enjoy the beautiful scenery while visiting Houlong. The pictures were also well received by the visitors on the scene and achieved the purpose of the overall marketing of local tourism and industries.
The activities also gave out specially-made watermelon maps so that the visitors can become acquainted with the scenic attractions in Houlong and truly enjoy their trip to Houlong. The map also includes information about the watermelon farmers in Houlong Township so that the users can directly contact them and enjoy the sweet and juicy Houlong watermelons delivered to their home.
