Since taro is in season, the county government is continuing to assist the farmers’ association in holding the taro evaluation and competition in order to provide the public with quality produce. This year, fifty taro farmers from Gongguan, Tongluo, and Miaoli City are participating. The taros were submitted to a drug test two days before the evaluation. Personnel from the promotion department of the farmers’ associations went to the farmers’ fields for sampling, coding, and sealing. Chairman Han said that the taros this year have performed well in quality and weight and have great taste and fragrance. The evaluation process has keen competition.

The first stage is external evaluation, including average weight, shape, longitudinal section, diseases, and pests. Then the second stage consists of the ripe taro competition regarding fragrance, color, texture, and flavor. The judges carefully tasted the taros and then carry out considerable discussions. The result was announced at about 1 pm. The taro farmer, Wan An-rong, from Kung-Kuan Farmers’ Association won the taro championship this year. The first runner-up prize went to Li Cai-xin from Gongguan Township. The second runner-up prize was awarded to Huang Shou-chun from Tongluo Township and Xu Xue-mei from Miaoli City. The third runner-up prize was given to Xu Qiu-xiang from Gongguan Township and Lai Liang-quan from Tongluo Township.

The cultivation area in Miaoli for taros is vast, especially Gongguan Township, which has the largest production and 350 hectares of fields. Through the taro evaluation and competition, the quality taros of Miaoli will be promoted nationwide. Furthermore, Kung-Kuan Farmers’ Association will hold the taro marketing press conference “Gongguan Taro and Jujube, So Healthy” at Taipei Expo Park on November 30. Fresh taros and jujube series products will be displayed and sold to promote seasonal produce. As for quality, the taro of Miaoli County rivals the taro of Dajia, Taichung. We encourage everyone to try the chewy and soft Miaoli taro!
