The lecture hall of Yingcai Academy, Miaoli County, invites the two winners of the Culture and Arts Awards, ceramicists Lai Fu-huan and Wu Han-qian,  to hold a “Wood-fired and Mixed Clay Ceramics Exhibition” starting August 7, 2020.

Ceramicist Lai Fu-huan is the winner of the fifth Chinese Culture and Arts Awards - Folk Art Award. Born in 1935 in Gongguan, Miaoli, he has been engaged in ceramic work for 68 years and is regarded as a national treasure of the craft in Taiwan. At the age of 80, he still makes large pots by hand as he fully grasps the clay and runs it in an upward and downward spiral on the pottery wheel. A sense of ease can be found in his levels of concentration. The naturally formed magnificent momentum is handled tenderly and with a sophisticated classical charm.

Ceramicist Wu Han-qian was born in 1940 in Gongguan, Miaoli. He has been involved in ceramics for 63 years and is regarded as a national treasure in the art of clay pottery. He specializes in creating pieces with mixed clay (colored clay), shaping a variety of styles with greatly difficult throwing techniques. His works are presented in various colors. The naturally formed dreamlike patterns represent great natural phenomena like clouds, the sea, the immense universe, a starlit sky, mist, roaring waves, and natural and harmonious indigenous totems. His pieces and the colors highlight a full-of-vitality philosophy of life.

The exhibition includes 65 great pieces of work created by these two experienced masters of the craft. The gold and silver colors of the grand wood-fired pots really catch the eye. The patterns on the large mixed-clay round jar look like layered clouds and surging waves. Each piece on exhibition is truly a masterpiece. The exhibition will last until January 3, 2021. For those who love ceramics don’t miss out on the chance to appreciate the collective works of these two masters.
