Miaoli County Police Bureau Cooperates with Popular Local Online Streamers to Advocate Fraud Detection

•TEL: 356019

To increase multiple channels for fraud detection advocation, the Miaoli County Police Bureau has invited the Yujiang Glass Workshop online streamer in Touwu Township on October 4 to publicize fake investment scams and employment fraud issues on its streaming platform. These are common types of fraud that citizens encounter. Through the promotion of popular online streamers (with tens of thousands of fans), we’d like to remind citizens online to be cautious of fraud. If anyone encounters fraud, it’s important to keep calm and verify the facts to minimize the risk of falling victim to defraud.

The Miaoli County Police Bureau made an analysis on reported cases accepted in the jurisdiction in September 2023. Based on the trend of reported cases, fraud methods, and victim groups, it concluded that the top three kinds of fraud cases are “fake investment scams, posing as a government or institutional employee, and online transactions or marriage and dating fraud”. Channels for fake investment scams are all over the internet. Investment targets are usually virtual currency, and most victims encountered fraud in LINE groups or on Facebook. They met defrauders who claimed to have an opportunity for them to “make an investment to make money” and were seduced to join the investment group. The defrauders assured profits to lure the victims to invest their money. However, the victims lost all their money without receiving any profit.

With the rapid development of technology, fraudsters know how to use AI technology to commit crimes, which makes fraud methods even more realistic. As long as they acquire a three-second human voice file, they can synthesize and mimic a real person. Fraudsters can also capture the facial features of a person in a video or a photo to synthesize it into another person’s face, which make the victims of fraud (especially elderly people) believe them and then follow the scammer's instructions, providing personal information, making remittances, or transferring assets. Member of the public should pay attention and be on the lookout for such action to prevent themselves from falling victim to AI technology fraud methods.

“We’re not supposed to deceive others, but we do need to prevent ourselves from being defrauded.” The key is to “understand fraud” so that we can “prevent ourselves from being defrauded”. The police are making every effort to fight fraudsters to ensure the safety of citizens’ property. If the public have any doubts, please call 165 or 110 immediately to verify facts. Please do not remit money in haste; protect your assets.
