Guests Marketing Yuanli Granary at Hundred-year-old House with Rush and Rice Fragrance

     With abundant produce, Yuanli Township is considered among the most important granaries in Miaoli County. Yuankeng Community held the grand promotion for rush and rice at the hundred-year-old house, Donglijiafeng, on August 29 and 30. On the first day, the “thousand-year band” composed of local seniors gave a performance of eco percussion instruments, singing, and dancing to energize the atmosphere. Such DIY experiences as making traditional toys, as well as the agricultural product market, further defined the event. Magistrate Hsu Yao-chang, Township Mayor Liu Chiu-tung, and Director of the Taichung Branch of the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau, Huang Chen-chuan marketed the unique rush weaving culture and diverse agricultural products together and praised Yuankeng as a successful community model for rural regeneration.

        Magistrate Hsu Yao-chang said that Yuankeng is a veteran community of rural regeneration. In 2009, with the assistance of the county government, it joined the rural regeneration incubation project. After the four stages of the training courses over four years, it became an official rural regeneration community in 2013. The community has completely preserved the hundred-year-old house of Donglijiafeng with all of its ancient charm. With the careful maintenance and management of the Director-general of Agriculture, Fishing, and Animal Husbandry Leisure Tourism Promotion Association, Lin Yan-lin, it has become a famous tourist attraction, as well as a popular building for TV and film shooting. It is also an important spot for displaying and selling the certified brand, Shan Shou Xian. In recent years, it has further spread love to show concern for the disadvantaged and released prisoners.

        Magistrate Hsu Yao-chang, accompanied by the Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department, Chen Shu-yi, and the Director-general of the Association, Lin Yan-lin, visited stalls on the scene selling agricultural products, including organic rice, aged tea, ping-pong, honey, traditional snacks, and dried longan, enjoyed watching seniors weaving rush crafts and children playing with traditional toys like the bamboo dragonfly and spinning top with their parents, and kindly greeted visitors dressed in ancient costume ready to take photos at the historic house.

        After touring the historic house and the stalls, the guests Hsu Yao-chang, Liu Chiu-tung, and Huang Chen-chuan marketed the leisure tourist attractions and the diverse and abundant agricultural products of Yuanli together in an interview arranged by the community. Hsu Yao-chang said that the unique rush culture of Yuanli is worthy of being greatly promoted and passed down as planned so that the industry will continue to shine and thrive. There has also been significant effects with regard to the promotion of organic rice. The food and service of Dongfengjiali are well-praised by gourmands. These are not only the best characteristics to develop the tourism and leisure industry but also the stable cornerstone for Miaoli to become a happy city.

The Director of the Taichung Branch of the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau, Huang Chen-chuan, said that Miaoli has had outstanding performance in rural regeneration and community construction. Furthermore, the Council of Agriculture has selected 30 Rural Regeneration Award winners from the cadre of the related associations. Nine persons in Miaoli and Taichung were given the award, which recognizes the hard work of the county government, township offices, farmers associations, and communities. In the future, the Bureau will continue to cooperate with these agencies and add more resources to meet local needs. Township Mayor Liu Chiu-tung expressed his gratitude to the support and assistance of the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau and promised he will lead the team to create the different looks of Yuanli.
