Dahu Hakka Villages Greet Chinese New Year: “Thousand -people Making Tangyuan” Event Online Registration Starts

Dahu Township will hold a Spring Festival event for thousands of visitors at the Guangting Second Parking Lot on February 8. The promotion press conference was held today, and the “Thousand-people Making Tangyuan” online registration starts today with a limit of 300 persons. In addition, it’s time for the second crop of Dahu strawberries. The township office invites tourists from all over the country to pick strawberries and enjoy an in-depth tour of Dahu during Chinese New Year.

“The hometown of strawberries, Dahu” is the tourist attraction of Romantic Provincial Highway 3. Besides the well-preserved Hakka cultural areas, Dahu also has Dahu Old Street, with many traditional Hakka architectural style townhouses. The traditional Hakka cultural events are held whenever festivals are held. It is recommended by the Hakka Affairs Council as one of the ten special Hakka townships in Taiwan.

The Lantern Festival celebration has taken place for many years in Dahu Township and has become a local annual event. On the morning of this year’s Lantern Festival, there will be a joint celebration of village land gods gathering at the Yimin Temple square. At 3PM, at the Guangting Second Parking Lot beside the household registration office, the “Thousand-people Making Tangyuan” event will be held. The event will include making tangyuan, guessing lantern riddles, tasting Hakka delicacies, selling agricultural products, and setting off fireworks. There will also be lucky draws offering prizes such as LCD TVs and bicycles. 

At the promotion press conference this morning, “Xinhui & Lihua” kicked off the event by singing several Hakka songs. Deputy magistrate Teng, Kuei-Chu, legislator Hsu, Chih-Jung, councilor Hsu, Chin-Hung, Dahu Town Major Hu, Niang-Mei, and Chairman of Township Representative Council Hsieh, Chien-Te made tangyuan together and placed the small balls of pink and white tangyuan into the Chinese characters of “2020 Hakka Villages Greet the Spring.” We invite tourists from all over the country to spend their Lantern Festival in Dahu and taste the delicacies.

Deputy magistrate Teng, Kuei-Chu noted that Dahu has good mountains, good waters, and good people. There is also an abundance of cultural and ecological sceneries, making it the Hakka township with the greatest charm. Currently, strawberries and Tankan oranges are also in season. Dahu welcomes tourists from all over the country to spend the joyful Spring Festival and Lantern Festival and enjoy an in-depth tour in Dahu, tasting the Hakka delicacies and bringing home the special agricultural products as souvenirs.

Dahu Town Mayor Hu, Niang-Mei pointed out that the event of the thousand-people greeting the Chinese New year will invite the AmuBwiy Puing Culture Arts Group, Damiaoli Acrobatic Troupe, the indigenous band Jo Jun, New Trend Japan Ichiban Dance Troupe, and the famous Hakka singer Chen Meng-qiao to give their splendid performances. At the same time, twelve groups from local community schools will also take turns performing for the public to enjoy the passion and energy of Dahu.

The “Thousand-people Making Tangyuan” event will be held at 3:30PM in the afternoon of the Lantern Festival. The online registration is now open (online registration link: https://dcd.idv.tw/G2020 ) with a 300-quota limit. At 3PM on the day of the event (February 8), there will be an additional 120 quotas available for on-site registration. There will also be 120 quotas reserved for the local residents of Dahu. Anyone who wants to participate, please consult the village leaders for information.

Those who join in the “Thousand-people Making Tangyuan” event will be given 0.6 kg of tangyuan, a Hakka bamboo sieve, and Hakka floral fabric. After the event, everyone will be given a set meal of fried rice noodles and radish soup with meat balls. There are also limited quantities of red envelopes for participants to represent endless wealth in the year of the rat.
