The Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum is hosting the "Special Exhibition of Taiwan Wood Sculpture 2026 “One Wood, One Heart” Huang Kuo-shu Woodcarving Heritage Exhibition" today, showcasing some 80 representative works by Huang Kuo-shu, who has dedicated over 30 years to woodcarving. Deputy Magistrate Lai Hsiang-ling praised Huang Kuo-shu's works for their profound understanding and portrayal of the human mindset and humanity, deemed to be well worth close-up appreciation. She welcomed the public to visit the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum to appreciate the beauty of the master's woodcarving art and craftsmanship.
Huang Kuo-shu was born in Lukang, Changhua in 1958, and grew up in a small town soaked in Han Chinese culture and faith. Since the locality is teamed with the "Buddha-rendition" craft, it nurtured his artistic potential. After graduating from junior high school, Huang Kuo-shu entered a woodcarving factory, and was later apprenticed under Lukang woodcarving master Lee Song-lin. From Lee he learned profound traditional techniques which led him to develop his own unique creative landscape, thus finding a new direction for his woodcarving creations.
Since then, Huang Kuo-shu's woodcarving art has won multiple important national awards. In 1995 he won first prize in the carving category of the 4th National Craft Awards, in 2003 he won first prize in the 3rd National Craft Awards, in 2004, silver at the 8th Yulon Woodcarving Awards, and in 2024 he won the special honor of the Taiwan Woodcarving Heritage Achievement Awards.
The Miaoli County Culture and Tourism Bureau held the opening ceremony for the "One Wood, One Heart" Huang Kuo-shu Woodcarving Heritage Exhibition at the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum this morning. In attendance were Deputy Magistrate Lai Hsiang-ling, Deputy Director of the Culture and Tourism Bureau of Miaoli County Hsu Chien-nan, Councilor Li Shang-an, Professor Emeritus Hsiao Chiung-jui of the Department of History of the National Cheng Kung University, Chairman Tseng Chun-hao of the Taiwan Woodcarving Association, and representatives from art and cultural groups. The Miaoli County Guzheng Art Association also gave a wonderful performance, demonstrating melodious tunes to convey Huang Kuo-shu's dedication, diligence, and perseverance in his craft.
As stated by the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum, the Special Exhibition of Taiwan Wood Sculpture is a major annual exhibition of the institute. This year it will showcase 80 exquisite wood sculptures by artist Huang Kuo-shu, winner of the 2024 Taiwan Woodcarving Heritage Achievement Awards. The exhibition is themed around three creative types: "Temple Culture," "Farm Life," and "Buddhist Practice." His representative work, "A Night Visit to Lukang," borrowed from the National Museum of History, incorporates the folk customs of his hometown, Lukang, into his work. Overcoming the limitations of traditional relief carving, it conveys dramatic tension through smoke and the light of the night, pioneering a new era in three-dimensional wood carving.
Another major work, "Difficult Yet Persevering," borrowed from the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Center, is a classic example of Huang Kuo-shu's introspective exploration during his relocation to the mountains. This very work integrates his art and spiritual practice, demonstrating the artist to forging ahead while carrying on tradition and his examination of artistic possibilities.
Huang Kuo-shu's "One Wood, One Heart" woodcarving exhibition is on display from now until July 12th on the 3rd and 4th floors of Hall 2 of the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum.
