The Miaoli County Government is expanding the uses of the Senior Citizen Card to include taxi services starting June 1, 2026, benefiting senior citizens and people with disabilities. Magistrate Chung Tung-chin stated that in addition to taxi rides, cardholders can also use it for shopping at various farmers associations from June. Once the system has completed its pilot phase, adjustments will then be made in line with the county government's finances to ensure the benefits of the Senior Citizen Card expand each year and bring more happiness to senior citizens living in Miaoli.

As of the end of April this year, Miaoli County has 108,794 people aged 65 and over, accounting for 20.51% of the county's total population, indicative of an aging society. The are currently approximately 80,000 Senior Citizen Card holders, demonstrating the increasing demand for transportation services among senior citizens and people with disabilities.

The Elderly and Disability Welfare Section of the Department of Social Affairs pointed out that this expansion of the Senior Citizen Card to include taxi services primarily covers service areas such as Miaoli County, Hsinchu County, Hsinchu City, and Taichung City. The card provides a monthly grant of 200 points and a maximum subsidy of 100 points per trip.

The Elderly and Disability Welfare Section of the Department of Social Affairs also stated that the existing Senior Citizen Card can be used on transportation services operated by Miaoli Bus, Hsinchu Bus, Fengyuan Bus, Geya-Bus Transportation, Champion Transportation, Nrenta Transportation Co, Ltd., and Yi-Jet Tech Integration Co., Ltd. to encourage senior citizens and people with disabilities to make use of public transportation and to promote social participation. Furthermore, social welfare points can, starting May 1, 2026, also be used on routes operated by MRT Bus Co., Ltd.

County Magistrate Chung also expressed his special thanks to Professor Wu Kuei-yang of the Department of Architecture from National United University for assisting with the design of the identification stickers for "Miaoli County Senior Citizen Compassion Taxi Fleet." The stickers incorporate Miaoli's mascot, "Maoli Miao," using lively and warm local elements to enhance brand recognition and help the public easily identify the fleet, demonstrating Miaoli's commitment to promoting age-friendly transportation services.

County Magistrate Chung Tung-chin pointed out that passenger transport capacity has gradually decreased in recent years, more so in rural areas, making access to transportation rather limited. Therefore, he hopes to expand the Senior Citizen Card to include taxi services, supplementing the transportation needs of rural areas and areas with insufficient public transportation, making it more convenient and safer for senior citizens and people with disabilities to go out shopping, seek medical treatment, visit relatives and friends, or participate in community activities.

Chung Tung-chin stated that aside from the monthly subsidy of 200 points for taxi rides, the Senior Citizen Card will also subsidize 100 rides per month from July 1st this year, so holders can use the card to shop at various farmers' associations. He also encouraged senior citizens to make full use of this service, and emphasized that the county government will continue to optimize card services, gradually expanding its scope of use, so that elderly people living in Miaoli can enjoy a happy life in their golden years.
