The Miaoli County Social Welfare Promotion Association held the “New Year Celebration and Joyful Sharing — Free Resource Sharing Day” event at Ziyun Temple in Houlong on February 7. Distributing donated supplies, the event aimed to ensure that resources are fully utilized while providing support to those in need. Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tung-Chin expressed his appreciation to the association’s partners, volunteers, and community members who have long supported public welfare initiatives, noting that their efforts help spread warmth and demonstrate the strength of community support within society. He also mentioned that a new college affiliated with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University is planned to be the reserved site for Houlong Xingang Senior High School, which is expected to benefit students in Houlong and surrounding areas. He expressed hope that construction will start promptly and proceed smoothly so it can be completed as soon as possible.
The association has long focused on supporting disadvantaged groups and actively promoting public welfare. Through resource integration and supply sharing, Executive Director Mei Wen-Hsia explained that the event brought together charitable donations from across Taiwan. In addition to providing essential daily necessities to low-income households, the event allowed residents to select daily essentials and recreational items, enabling more families to experience the warmth of society during the festive season. The event also promoted resource recycling and reuse, encouraging the sustainable circulation of goods throughout the community.
Magistrate Chung, Miaoli County Council Speaker Lee Wen-Pin, County Councilors Lin Bao-Chu and Cheng Chiu-Feng, Houlong Township Mayor Hsieh Ching-Hui, and other elected representatives attended the event on February 7 to witness the charitable initiative. The event was not only a show of compassion but also supported environmental sustainability. The county government stated that it will continue to work closely with local organizations to expand care services, provide support to families in need, encourage public participation in charitable activities, and foster a warm and inclusive Miaoli.
Magistrate Chung noted that although material resources in society continue to grow as society progresses, economic disparities remain significant. In addition to promoting welfare programs and public infrastructure through government taxation systems, charitable individuals and civic organizations play an essential role by contributing financial resources and manpower to public welfare activities. He expressed gratitude to the association for organizing such a meaningful and heartwarming event during the cold season, emphasizing that government agencies and township offices often face manpower limitations and rely heavily on support from community organizations. He added that the association’s thoughtful planning allowed residents in need to feel the warmth of society, which deserves widespread recognition.
Magistrate Chung further stated that National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University plans to establish a college on the reserved site of Houlong Xingang Senior High School. He explained that the project was first proposed three years ago and emphasized that policy implementation must allow for careful planning, efficiency, and accountability. Considering that regulations requiring science experimental high schools to be located within areas dedicated to science parks, such schools can only be established after planning for the Zhunan and Toufen Science Parks is completed and enrollment requirements met. To provide educational opportunities for academically motivated students in Houlong and other townships, the college is currently in the design and planning stage. Construction is expected to begin soon, with enrollment tentatively scheduled for the 2028 academic year.
