To promote local arts and boost the visibility of performing arts groups, the Culture and Tourism Bureau of Miaoli County has launched the 2025 Miaoli County Outstanding Performing Arts Support Program. Through a professional selection process, six exceptional groups were chosen to receive one year of creative funding. Among these, Hui Fong Dance Group was selected to represent Miaoli in the Northern Taiwan Regional Outstanding Performing Arts Exchange Program, presenting a newly reimagined production titled “Weaving the Hakka Dream”. Blending theater and dance in an experimental black box theater format, the performance invites audiences into the inner world of the choreographer’s creative process. The production will premiere on 25 October at the Center for the Arts of National United University in Miaoli, followed by a second performance on 1 November at Barn 169 Theater in Taoyuan City. Both shows require advance ticket reservations through the ACCUPASS online system.
In 2024, Hui Fong Dance Group first created this work, inspired by the classic Hakka dance pieces choreographed by Chou Hui-Tan, who received the Hakka Contribution Award. The piece turns the choreographer’s creative journey into a cross-disciplinary performance that combines dramatic storytelling with dance. “Weaving the Hakka Dream” breaks away from traditional stage conventions by using an immersive, circular black box setup, allowing audiences to go beyond being mere spectators and experience the birth of dance firsthand, feeling the creator’s struggles and emotions while gaining a deeper understanding of artistic expression.
This year, as Miaoli’s representative in the Northern Taiwan Regional Outstanding Performing Arts Exchange Program, Hui Fong Dance Group is touring with “Weaving the Hakka Dream”, continuing to interpret the work through the innovative language of modern theater. The group hopes to attract more young audiences to the stage, encouraging them to explore the depth and beauty of Hakka culture. In collaboration with National Central University and National United University, Hui Fong Dance Group is also hosting student workshops on dance and theater, giving young participants the chance to understand the creative process and experience the expressive power of Hakka dance firsthand, building a bridge between youth and Hakka culture.
Founded in 1991, Hui Fong Dance Group has been dedicated to dance creation and cross-strait cultural exchange in ethnic and folk dance, performing at major arts festivals both nationally and internationally. With this new tour, the group aims to inspire younger audiences to enter the theater, experience the contemporary energy of Hakka dance, and appreciate its rich cultural significance. You are warmly invited to join us on this artistic journey and help weave the Hakka dream of our era.
