According to Miaoli County Magistrate HSU, YAO-CHANG, Miaoli County has promoted cultural and tourist development in recent years. Besides “International Slow Cities (Cittaslow),” the first “railbike” in Taiwan, and Hakka Literary Garden, we have gradually headed toward “World Heritage of Charm, International Cittaslow.” The public art project this time is financed by the legal budget planned when the county government office building was built based on Article 9 of the Cultural and Arts Reward Act: “Publicly-owned buildings shall be fitted with public artworks to beautify them and their surroundings. The value of such artworks shall not be less than one percent of the cost of construction of the buildings.” It was implemented after passing the review of the advisory committee based on Regulations Governing the Installation of Public Artwork and the project direction discussed by the executive team composed of professionals and scholars. The successful achievement is to exhibit Master JU MING’s “Living World Series” at the hall of the county government office building so that the public who visit on business can appreciate the artistic beauty of JU MING’s works at a close distance.

Director-general of the Culture and Tourism Bureau, LIN, YEN-FU said public art can be seen in government agencies and schools. The artworks will bring a calming atmosphere and add an artistic atmosphere to the office environment. JU MING was born in Tongxiao Township in Miaoli County, and when he turned fifteen, he started to learn traditional temple sculpturing and painting with the master LI, JIN-CHUAN. At the age of thirty, he started to follow the master sculptor in Taiwan, YANG, YU-YU. JU MING integrates the spirit of traditional wood sculpture and modern art and gradually develops the unique style that surpasses both. He has won major awards such as the National Cultural Award and Fukuoka Prize and is a representative artist in Taiwan.

“Living World Series,” which has been developed for more than thirty years, reflects JU MING’s perspective and representation of all kinds of characters in the ordinary world. The style is free and casual. The subject matter is rich and diverse, including a variety of characters including athletes, monks, and modern women. The series is also one of JU MING most confident works. The two pieces of artwork, KANG MU-XIANG’s “Perfect Life-Miaoli” in the county hall square and JU MING’s “Living World Series” reflect upon each other and add new artistic highlights to the county government.
